I n t e r v i e w with Erika Pongratz

How did you strike on the idea to paint shoes respektively to deal with shoes artistically?
Well, there was that wonderful worm summernight in August when we were sitting in the backyard drinking wine and you came to us and showed us an old pair of shoes. You asked wheter anyone of us had an idea to create something out of it and I looked at the shoes and said: “If you give me some oil paint and a brush I’ll make something out of them.” So that’s how it all started and that pair of shoes became the first in a row of art [painted] shoes.

You said: „I combine in my artistical work with shoes different levels: fashion, expression and art.“ Could you please elaborate this a little bit more detailed.
Expression as well as art is a very personal, individual thing for me because different people may express the same feelings, oppinions or issues in a totally different way. In the first place expression means to show or to put into focus something formerly hidden through special means or media. In this case here I try to show my personal feelings and associations through the depainting and decorating of shoes. That is an interplay between the thing – the shoe – and me. Inside myself there are feelings, desires, dreams which I contribute, but also the shoe contributes through its form, its base colour, its obvious pristine function as sports shoe, lady’s shoe or slide. Through this interplay art is generated. To concretise ones own dreamful phantasies and out of ones mind make them real in the form of these shoes – that is art to me.

And also: „Each pair of shoes – originally created by a designer, produced and bought by a consumer and put on (to a greater or lesser extent)- is raised in a fantasy world through my own artistical intuition, mainly painted in oil colour and brush, but also with other accessoires. In this world borders of the materialism become indistinct, the whole colour palette is ruling and a total freeing of social and fashionable norms is existing.“ Do you also have another matter besides doing art (social, political or the like)?
The basic intention for my art and here especially for this exhibition is the enjoyment of expressing my phantasies and the joy of working with these materials: second-hand shoes, oil resp. acrylic paint, spray colour, glitter, pearls, etc. I’m also happy when people can be motivated to get creators themselves or when they bring along their own shoes for me to paint them or to design them together with me. Insofar the exhibition has a social character too as to experience together the enjoyment of creation.

Was erwarten Sie von Berlin?
What do you expect of Berlin?
I don’t have any special expectations. I’ve been awhile to Berlin already 3 times and felt it was a very open and convenient city – quite contrary to London where I lived for half a year. I’m just looking forward to having a good and enjoyable time with you and the visitors of the Sumpfhahn/Sumpfhennen (boghens).
